Easy Tips To Try Before You Call in The Plumbers

There is nothing that can replace the expertise and experience of licensed plumbers when you are dealing with a real plumbing emergency. However, when you are dealing with many of the smaller plumbing issues, do you really need to call the plumbers? Many times, for the smaller plumbing issues, you can fix them yourself with a little knowledge. This knowledge can save you money since you won’t need to call the plumbers in to do the work. Here are some things to try before you call in the plumbers.

- Speeding Up a Slow Drain

Not all drains are clogged enough to be blocked; however, a building clog can slow down a drain. If you are noticing that your drain is not draining as fast as it normally does, you can use table salt to help clear the block that has formed. Start by pouring about a quart of hot water down the drain, then pour about a half a cup of salt down the drain, with another quart of boiling water. The salt is abrasive and will help loosen the clog from the sides of the piping. The water is used to flush the clog loose.

- Avoid a Toilet Overflowing

The only thing that is worse than a clogged toilet, is a toilet that is overflowing. However, there are a few precautions that you can take before you start with any clog clearing methods, to limit the risk of an overflowing toilet.

The first thing is to reach into your toilet tank, and make sure that the flap that allows water into the tank is closed. Once you have the flap closed, then find the hose that connects your toilet to the wall. Normally, this is behind the toilet on the left side. There should be a knob on this hose, turn the knob to the right to shut off the water supply. Once the water supply is turned off, you can unclog your toilet without having to worry about an overflowing toilet.

- Clean the Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal can get really gross. However, if you clean and freshen the garbage disposal every month, you are able to avoid needing to call a plumber to deal with a backed-up disposal. You only need to cut up some lemons, white vinegar, an ice-cube tray, and a freezer. Place the cut lemon in each ice-cube slot and then pour the white vinegar and freeze the tray. Once the vinegar is frozen, throw them into your garbage disposal.
